Happy Neighbours in Basement Construction

How to keep your neighbours happy during the basement building process…..

There are no two ways about it.  If you decide to build a basement in your home, it will be disruptive for your neighbours.  Your best bet is to try to get your neighbours onside before the project starts, and put in place measures to minimise the noise and disruption for them as much as possible.

We recommend to all our clients that a letter is sent out to neighbours ahead of planning, outlining what you are doing, how long it will take and who to contact for more information.

It’ my party…

It’s a great idea to hold a meeting at your property and invite the neighbours round for a glass of wine, talk them through the build and what it will mean to you and your family.  It may seem daunting, but quite often this alleviates their concerns and introduces them to the people doing the work, who can answer their questions assuredly, putting them at ease. Getting the understanding and empathy of your neighbours will go a long way.

Neighbours in the know…..

Your neighbors will want to be assured that the company you use know what they know what they are doing and will complete the works as quickly and safely as possible with the relevant insurances in place. We can work with your neighbours to schedule quiet work if they have an important meeting or event on at home. We try to be as accommodating as possible without putting the programme behind, this is important for your neighbours to know, and will certainly put you on the right track.

It is important that any concerns or questions are answered ahead of planning to avoid potential negative comments on the planning application portal.  So – whilst these measures might seem over the top, you are likely to reap the rewards throughout out the project.

Once the build is underway we will introduce your neighbors to the site foreman and the operations director and share our phone numbers.

Keeping it clean….

A major part of the disruption for neighbours is mess.  We’re on it! Our hoardings are beautiful (we think) and our staff are tasked with ensuring the road, pavement and any walkways are clean and safe, for passing pedestrians and traffic at all times.

Once the work is completed, it’s a good idea to invite the neighbours round for the unveiling, they will be curious to know how your basement has turned out and what you are using the space for.
